Microcement: Important Considerations

While microcement may look appealing, it's essential to understand a few key points before proceeding. Our extensive experience informs our perspective on this medium. 

1. Application Limitations: We exclusively apply microcement on walls. After years of experience with floors, we faced ongoing cracking issues that led us to stop its use in that area.

2. Heating Issues: Applying microcement over screed with underfloor heating (UFH) will likely result in cracks. It's not a matter of 'if,' but 'when.’ The combination of screed and heat is problematic because: Screed, being a cement-based product, lacks flexibility. When exposed to heat, it expands, causing hairline cracks that transfer directly into the microcement above. Even using polymer additives or reinforcement layers does not prevent cracking.

3. Better Alternatives: We prefer using polyurethane resins called ‘Blend.’ This two-tone resin mimics the look of microcement but offers: Up to 13% flexibility (similar to rubber), compared to less than 1% for microcement, which is brittle and hard. Greater tolerance to cracks; if the screed does develop a tiny crack, it won’t immediately show through as it would with microcement. A softer feel underfoot and easier maintenance without staining issues.

4. Exceptions: In warmer climates like those found in Mediterranean countries - especially where UFH isn't used - microcement can perform better but still tends to mark easily. Many companies promoting this product often overlook its shortcomings for obvious reasons, so be cautious when considering your options.
